Day trip to Zipaquirá from Bogotá (August, 6th)

The alarm of my mobile phone rings at 7 o´clock and I have to get ready quickly to meet Francis at a bus-stop nearby. The again too cold shower sure helped to speed up things. On the way I´m having breakfast in the sun.

Francis arrives in time - the Latino way, and then we get on the bus to the northern outskirts of Bogotá, which takes the better part of an hour. There we change into a minibus to the town of Zipaquirá, some 35 miles away from Bogotá, where we want to visit the world´s largest underground salt cathedral in the town´s salt mine. Zipaquirá itself turns out to be a nice, laid-back town with a beautiful colonial centre.

I´m lucky that Francis shares my photomania ;-)

A short walk takes us to the famous salt cathedral, built into a huge, still operating, salt mine. The sheer dimensions of the 3-naved cathedral and the mysterious lighting make this a sight to remember, even though the massive crowds and the gigantic giftshop take away some of the spiritual feeling.

Back in Bogotá we stroll through La Candelaria and have a bite and some drinks in this atmospheric part of the city. This city has really got under my skin!
